Originally a video artist and sculptor, I became involved in the web by chance in 1997, and have been working as an interactive designer since, whilst continuing to produce art pieces that are net-based and, more recently, developing commission works.
I've always been struck by the web's potential as a medium of intimacy. Content is still largely produced by an isolated individual behind a screen, and experienced by an isolated individual in front of one, allowing us essentially to talk one-to-one, often with no idea who we are talking to.
Communicating with strangers is a central part of my work. I am also interested in trying to express those things we either find difficult, or are unwilling, to put into words. It's about making connections: if you relate to what I'm expressing, you and I connect, even if we don't know and can't see each other.
Increasingly I've been moving away from making literal statements into expressing something more vague and atmospheric: combining elements to generate an overriding mood made up of a series of components where technology (scripting) plays a part in what those moods may be. I like the idea of art having a hand its in own making, creating additional possibilities I may not think of.
